Dechene forms part of the West Jasper Place South Plan area, just west of the Donsdale and Gariepy. Dechene is almost completely stand alone residential houses whith real estate construction started in the 1980s and continued slowly but steadily into the early 2000s. Almost every house in Dechene Edmonton is owner occupied.
Dechene was named after Joseph Miville Dechene, who was born in Quebec and moved with his family to Alberta in 1892. They were among the first homesteaders in the Morinville district. Dechene moved to Edmonton in 1903 and opened a tobacco and news store in 1912. Later Dechene became engaged in political affairs and served as a member of the Alberta Legislature from 1921 to 1935. In 1940, he was elected as a member of Parliament for Athabasca. Dechene retained his seat until he retired in 1958.
