Malmo Plains is typical of a mature community in South Edmonton, mostly residential houses, built during the 1960s, and contains a mixture of condominiums, row houses, and low- and high-rise apartment buildings. Single family detached houses are the dominant structure and are only a few minutes from both the LRT and the University of Alberta.

The University of Alberta's married student multi-family complex, Michener Park, is located at the western end of Malmo Plains. The University of Alberta south campus and research farm is located north of Malmo Plains.
