The Blackburne area was annexed to the City on January 1, 1982. Blackburne is located immediately to the south of the Bearspaw neighbourhood, east of the Richford community and forms part of the Heritage district in South Edmonton. The Blackburne district was developed from the 1990s onward, with most of the houses constructed prior to Edmonton's last real estat boom.  The vast majority of the land is designated for residential purposes, with detached single family houses as the dominant housing form. Blackburn Park is located in the south edge of the community, overlooking Blackmud Creek Ravine. The name Blackburne was derived from Blackmud Creek, which runs across the southern edge of the community, and in reference to burne, which is an old English word for stream or river.
